MUMBAI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday came to the rescue of thousands of residents of houses owned by public companies by limiting the application of a tough eviction law. It clarified that the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, can only be applied from September 16, 1958, or from a later date when such premises became government-owned with the nationalization of the banks and private insurance majors.
